More guns or more ammo

I am about to spend my monthly prep allowance. If you had the option of adding another shotgun to the stockpile, or a few more rounds, what would you do? I was looking at a new Mossberg, but my prep partner, i.e. wife, thinks more ammo is a better idea.

better go with your wife's suggestion.

Re: More guns or more ammo

How many guns do you have vs how much ammo do you have?

naturaly, I'd say ammo.

If you want to get into it you can only shoot "one" gun at a time anyways right? Is everyone capable of fighting equiped with at least one fire arms in SHTF scenario? If so, go with the ammo.

Do you have an "adequate" supply of ammo for each of those guns?

A 20ga for the wife might convince her to get a gun instead of ammo :)

more ammo if you have a shot gun already

Ammo.
The name of the game right now isn't gun control, it's ammo control.
Ask anyone who's tried to buy .22LR or .45ACP lately... they'll tell you.

Cool wife! I'd vote for more ammo for the firesticks than another club for when you run out of ammo.

Ammo. Some spare parts and an extra gun cleaning kit.

Do you have reloading equipment? Maybe now's a good time to start putting your kit together.

I'm going to have to swim against the current on this one. Telling somebody to buy ammo now is like telling somebody to buy gold when it is at the high for the year.

Gun prices are a lot closer to normal. Supply is up. You can even get at lot of the military style rifles for decent prices. Ammo, on the other hand, is in short supply. When you can find it, they want ridiculous amounts of money for it. So you buy the thing that is the best deal. Right now that is guns. Ammo prices will come down eventually. More importantly, availability will come back.

Now that doesn't mean it is a bad idea to buy a bunch of reloading equipment. The only problem there is that components are like ammo right now. Primers are frigging crazy to find and priced accordingly. I seem to be able to find powder of ever kind although prices are higher than they used to be. The local thing that bothers me is that standard old .22 LR is amazingly scarce. I've still got a few thousand rounds left but I hate to shoot today what I can't replace tomorrow.

You assume ammunition will come down in price. I don't believe that for a second, not with the Obamanation in charge of the Federal regime. If anything, ammunition will go up in price from here on out, if not be restricted to the point of it being effectively banned (probably taxed beyond the ability of most to afford it).

Guns are relatively easy to obtain. Ammunition not at all. You can get a .380 ACP, for example, for fairly cheap, at least around here, in part because you can't buy quality ammo for it, even at the selling gun dealer.

Get some buckshot for the shotgun you already have first. Slugs and Birdshot is in far more abundant supply. Same for pump shotguns, they're in abundant supply also. You'll always be able to pick one of those up later.
In any case, I think it's a good idea to have 2 handguns (if you don't already) for you and your better half in the same caliber if possible to be able to share the ammo.

Re: More guns or more ammo

If you don't have a good 22 then buy one and some ammo, and then buy more 22 ammo. 22 rimfire will do more to feed your family than the shotgun will most likely and 22 ammo will also make for a great currency should the defecation hit the rotary atmosphere oscillator.

22 ammo is priced ok right now, especially online. S&B buckshot is also fairly priced. I prepared last fall when I saw N'Obama had a chance to win and loaded up a "no payment till 2010" credit card on ammo. Credit card is almost paid off and I have 4-5 cases of each caliber ammo I use regularly, .308, .223, 30 carbine, 7.62X25 and probably 10 cases (5000 rounds per case) of 22. I also have plenty of handgun reloading supplies on hand. Only factory handgun ammo I shoot is when I need to rotate out carry ammo. It it does hit the fan I am set...if it doesn't I won't have to buy ammo probably for the rest of my life.

Keep a proper balance of guns and ammo, although I agree that it is a good time to obtain guns.

Properly stored ammo is money in the bank, and I also agree that reloading is a great way to stock up on bulk components.

Hell, take it a step further and go with the same model hand gun so you can share ammo and mags.

I'm in the same happy boat. Just when I think we have "enough" ammo, my wife coaxes me to look for / buy more. It used to irritate her when I wanted to go by the Sporting Goods section at Wal-Mart every time we shopped, but now she doesn't blink an eye, and even reminds me of it, following me right over there.

She is "afraid" of guns in the sense she doesn't derive pleasure from them, but she greatly respects their awesome power and the need for them. She has her own pistol and shotgun. She has come to terms with the need for firearms after many lessons on their role in preventing or "managing" enslavement.

I say a nice vacation on a budget.

I just got back from Miami..

Clean, queen-bed ocean view room for $65 per night...

Flight for 2, nonstop roundtrip from Tennessee was $190.

Rented a 2007 Nissan Sentra for $133 total for three days.

Drove the keys to Key West, had a margarita in Hemingway's "Sloppy Joes Bar" on Duval and went to Smather's beach...Vegged out on GORGEOUS Pompano beach and ate $5 12 inch subs from Winn-Dixie and $10 New York pizza from across the street.

Best $850 total I have ever spent and I wouldn't trade it for 10 SKS rifles.

That's the most extreme view and highly unlikely to happen. Health care "reform" is the President's number one goal. And the Democrats in Congress as well. And yet it is still VERY iffy that he is going to get what he wants. Any efforts to pass gun control in Congress will rile up the moderate/Southern Democrats who are "A" rated by the NRA and won't go anywhere.

Ammo prices (including primers) shot up when Clinton became President. They then went back down. Actually is was the end of the 90's (after two terms with Bill) that I got some of my best deals. The only reason the ammo and component drought has lasted this long is the number of rounds the war is drawing off from the ammo makers. Iraq is getting closed down (at least from the US point of view) and then a lot of that capacity will be able to go to the civilian market.

I will make one concession. If you don't have a decent amount of ammo on hand right now, then you have to bite the bullet and buy some. But if you have a decent amount already, then it seems like a bad time to stockpile ammo to me. That's just my opinion but that's all any of us has right now about the future!

Agreed

Quality name brand ammo will always be sought after .

Also store up on magazines.

You can "Make" a gun if you had it to relatively easy.........but you cant make quality ammo ( how many folk know how to safely refine gunpowder?)

When I started making preps in 1999, I obtained guns, ammo, gold and silver.

Of the four metal commodities above, ammo has out-performed the other three by about 200% (Au took 2nd place).

Buy more ammo, but make sure you have a gun...

Nobody can answer this unless we have an idea of what you have and how many people you might need to arm.

I'm sure some gimmers have 1 or 2 weapons while others have a closet packed full.:23_30_104: Some have stocked ammo until the concrete floor cracked.

At my house we have enough weapons that we don't stock spare parts. If one quits throw it down and grab another one.

I say if you have a rifle and a handgun for every person in your household who can handle them then get more ammo.
